The Missing Pages with CBC’s Tom Allen
On December 16, 1825 Theodore Molt became the sole Canadian to meet Ludwig van
Beethoven, but what could have happened between the two men? After Molt’s florid greeting
in one of Beethoven’s notebooks, the following four pages were violently ripped out and
destroyed. Betrayal? Competition? Scandal? Or just old-fashioned ego and pride? With music,
song, drama, history and informed speculation, The Missing Pages investigates.

Tom Allen (host of CBCMusic’s weekday show About Time) narrates “chamber musicals” – a
blend of theatrical storytelling, humour, drama and music – created around little-known facts
from music history. The Missing Pages tells the story of Theodore Molt, the one Canadian who
met Beethoven, twice in December of 1825. Because of his deafness, all of Beethoven’s
conversations were recorded in notebooks, and Molt’s greeting to him is indeed in one of the
books, but four pages following were, at some point, mysteriously ripped out. The Missing
Pages is a reconstruction of what might have happened between the two men. It features
renowned Canadian actor Derek Boyes, soprano Patricia O’Callaghan, pianist Gregory Oh, and
harpist Lori Gemmell, and is narrated by Tom Allen. Toronto Summer Music, the Stratford
Festival, Music Niagara and the Tuckamore Festival all featured this as a dedicated
presentation.
